| For those of you who play guitar (who wouldn't), let's talk about guitar. I have a jackson RR3 which is brutal. I put a Something beautiful and a shield of wings sticker on it so it looks badass-er, and I just downtuned it a half step from E standard. Here are some pics (from about a month and a half ago).

Cool guitar. I like keeping my guitars in Eb also. My friend and I are having an argument about it. He says that if we put our guitars in Eb and change the sound of our music, we'll be like every other band. Our appeal will be gone and we'll just fade into the mesh of so-so wanna be death metal bands. I argue that metal in standard tuning is dead. Bands like dragonforce have turned the Power Metal genre into near-pop, and the only other good option for standard tuning (thrash) is also dead and would be dumb decision if we ever wanna be able to play anywhere.

| ON FLAT TUNING
I been a KISS fan forever, and they tuned down for pretty much no good reason. Ever since than, I tune Eb for everything except at gigs I get paid to do, where we're all standard, especially if I'm playing with a piano player. Makes it easier to be able to speak in C without having to transpose mentally to concert pitch before trying to communicating with someone tuned standard.
I dunno about standard tuned metal being dead. King Diamond still does quality work, for example. Dream Theater is standard, though not necessarily the type of metal you're talking about. Once you go seven-stringed, you have this default B-string all the way down at the bottom, and if you drop tune, you're at A, which is fucking redonkulously low! Even in standard. Personally, I stay in Eb because of my vocal range. The highest note I currently sing is a Bb, so I think it's a comfort thing.
HOWEVER, there IS probably also a correlation between tuning verses whether bands that tune standard are lame, but I ain't done that math yet. You should, and get back to me!

| Band's change their tuning all the time. Most of the time not for the better though...(St Anger) (New Children of Bodom)
I got on a huge Iced Earth kick at one point and all of their songs are in Eb, so i guess thats why i like Eb so much. Also use C tuning for the melodic Death Metal stuff, and Standard for everything else.
Actually i think it would be a bad idea not to explore different tunings until you find the one that suits the band as a whole. You cant just say a tuning defines your sound really. There are like 10 tunings that are most common, (Dale leave that alone)without going into odd tunings.
Give it a try and see how it sounds, but you cant just say that Eb will hold you back. I highly doubt someone will hear your songs and say, "He's tuned to Eb... I'm outta here!"

| Yeah, but Iced Earth is pretty old, and is big today because they still have a fan following (from the old days). Now, the metal people like in standard tuning is like Trivium crap and Black Tide (who sounds like Motley Crue). Me and my friend always wanted to sound unique, but he seems to be thinking people will still pay to see an act done 20 years ago. | |

| They released their self titled cd in 1991. Thats not all that old really.
Yes they do have an old fan following, but they keep getting new fans all the time. They are playing with bigger bands, and even headlining as of late.
You can't focus on what other bands do too much. It's your band, make it sound like you. If you dont like what a band is doing... don't incorporate their style into yours.

| Honestly I think that tuning is the last thing I worry about when listening to new music. Okay, so I Do get snobbywhen guys play in drop D, but only (usually) when it appears that they are just being lazy.
Don't worry matt, I won't get too into this, but Jimmy Page used all sorts of funky tunings, but very little Zepplin can be considered heavy by anyones standards.

| The tuning of the guitar doesn't matter nearly as much as the quality of the songs that you are playing! | |

| Agreed Justin, if you play in standard tuning or if you play in drop c it really doesn't matter! The only thing that matters is the music that is produced. We see bands in all different tunings suck balls........ Make sure your music speaks to the audience, lyrically and instrumentally and all is well. Oh and just for the record 8 minute long 3 chord with no fill instrumentals suck balls!!!! | |

| I'm still in highschool, so I have just been at home honing my skills. Everyone at my school who is remotely interested in metal is a complete douchebag, or into crap. I have one friend that I have been doing stuff with, but I must say he needs lot of experience (sometimes I do too). I can write some very simplistic "Kill em-all" level songs, and that's about it. I have some lyrics laying around that I have been toying with. I also have one of my friends on the bass, but he's a senior going to college at the end of the year.
I guess my goal is to reach out and get a drummer, get some songs, and start doing little stuff by spring. I want to get into serious gigging about when I'm out of High School.
My "band" is called 'Warhead' BTW.
